Your nose is an important part of your overall health. Whatever its shape and whether you like it or not, you need it to filter the air you breathe, remove dust, germs and other environmental irritants. It treats breathing air to keep your lungs and bronchial tubes from drying out. When there is a problem with your nose, the whole body can suffer. For example, anyone who has ever experienced a stuffy nose as a symptom of the common cold know that it is hard to breathe, sleep or even get comfortable.

There are many problems besides the common cold can adversely affect the nose and its systems including:

  1. Deviated septum: some studies have estimated that more than three-quarters of all nasal septums are qualified as deviated, or “off-center.” This occurs when the nasal structures are severely shifted away from the midline and many cases go unnoticed by the patient. Among the symptoms, the most common is difficulty breathing through the nose. In some cases, it can interfere with proper sinus drainage and result in repeated sinus infections.
  2. Nasal polyps: these small growths in the nasal passages may not cause immediate symptoms, but groups of polyps can block your nasal passages and lead to breathing problems. They can also lead to a reduced sense of smell as well as frequent infections. Polyps can affect anyone, but present more often in adults. While medications can eliminate nasal polyps, surgery is sometimes needed to completely remove them.
  3. Rhinitis: can be caused by either allergic or non-allergic and causes inflammation in the nasal passages and sinuses. Non-allergic rhinitis usually begins in adulthood and causes symptoms such as a runny nose and stuffiness. Environmental triggers including strong odors, pollution, and various types of smoke, including tobacco, may cause symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis.

All of these conditions can be addressed by Orange County board-certified plastic surgeons that specialize in rhinoplasties and ear, nose, and throat maladies. Furthermore, if the procedure is deemed medically necessary, your insurance carrier may cover some if not all of the rhinoplasty cost.
