Complications

Nose jobs are complex surgical procedures that often involve invasive technique. While a rhinoplasty is done on the nose, it can be combined with a variety of other surgical procedures such as chin augmentation or neck liposuction. Successful plastic surgery requires careful preoperative planning with every portion of the nose, including tip, nasal bridge, and nostrils under precise analysis. During the pre-op phase, the proportion of the nose relative to face is calculated; therefore, rhinoplasty is a combination of art and science.

At the end of the day, this is a surgical procedure for getting that great looking nose you have always wanted. Like any surgical procedures, there are possible complications with the surgery, which an educated, well-informed patient would want to know. The most common post operative rhinoplasty issues are bruising and swelling. Long term irregularities such as swelling may take up to a year to subside. In addition to painful swelling and bruising, there are several other related risks associated with the procedure.

Post Operative Bleeding
Blood spotting from the nose is normal after a nose job, but strenuous exertion may cause small blood vessels to burst leading to profuse bleeding. While this is a rarity, contact your surgeon immediately.

Unexpected Results
Following the surgery, your nose may exhibit an abnormal or irregular shape. This sort of recovery can be attributed to individual healing issues or an error that occurred during the surgery. Even during unexpected recovery, healing is dependent on patient commitment. Following instructions such as not removing a splint or not side-sleeping can improve recovery.

Post Rhinoplasty Infection
There is a small possibility of infection during post-op recovery. If an infection does occur, it can be treated with drainage and antibiotics. While nasal implants certainly increase the possibilities of getting an infection, doctors can manage any complications with medicine. Septal hematoma, internal scars, and nerve damage causing loss of smell, toxic shock, and septal perforation may also present after surgery. Adverse reactions to medications may also occur following rhinoplasty.

When nose job is performed by a skilled and experienced rhinoplasty surgeon, the rate of complications decreases and is usually minor. However, every surgery includes uninvited outcomes or risk of complications.
