When you break your nose, your first instinct is to go to the emergency room to receive immediate attention, but, unless it is something like a compound fracture, or a septal hematoma, the treatment may be limited to mild painkillers and bed rest. If it is a serious, or compound fracture, an ER doctor may recommend surgery immediately. It is very important to treat the fracture immediately and appropriately, otherwise, it can lead to a crooked or misshapen nose.
Nose experts recommend that no matter how mild or severe a break, that the patient should seek out a Rhinoplasty specialist as soon as possible. If they do not get it treated immediately, as the bones and cartilage heals, there is the risk of poor fusion.
How do you know if you broke your nose?
Noses break rather easily when hit. People break their nose walking into a door, playing sports or being in a car accident. Usually, they experience quite a lot of pain, bruising, swelling, nosebleed or teary eyes. Sometimes the symptoms are subtler depending on the patient.
Either way, if you suspect you have a broken nose, consult with a nose specialist within a week of breaking it because surgery should be done within two weeks of the break. Failing to do so could lead to an undesirable look and sometimes breathing issues. Professional athletes, like boxers and hockey players tend to leave broken noses uncared for. When you don’t fix a broken nose right away, your nose will remain crooked, have bumps and sometimes have trouble breathing – that is why you see so many professional athletes with misshapen noses – they don’t have it taken care of right away.
Why trust the ER doctor’s advice?
Facial plastic surgeons perform nasal surgery day in and day out. When they examine the nose, they know how it will heal with time. Unfortunately, many people aren’t aware of the importance in getting a plastic surgeon’s opinion quickly. If left uncared for, a seemingly mild break can heal horribly. Not everybody wants to end up looking like a boxer or hockey player.
